Blue Rider residency with Tate

Published by on

In February 2024 Project Art Works held a residency in our newly refurbished Trinity Hall. The residency was a commission by Tate Modern as part of Expressionists: Kandinsky, Münter and The Blue Rider.

Visit us on the Tate website here.

To connect artists and studio workshops to the works of Expressionists: Kandinsky, Münter and The Blue Rider we set-up an environmental installation at our studio base in Hastings, using colour fields of blue, white and black, projections of paintings and environmental images we felt might stimulate imagination and connection to the works of Der Blaue Reiter. The transformation of the space was intriguing and ensured an evolving and subtle connection to the exhibition by the artists and makers attending the studios to work whilst immersed in the abstractions, colour and light of De Blaue Reiter.

Documentation of the process including works produced and photography will be part of the companion booklet Dialogues: Expressionists, available to buy in the Tate Modern shop.

“The Blue Rider collective were interested in colour, sound and sensory experiences and sought a new visual language of expression through their painterly practice. Responding to their approach, we wanted to work with Project Art Works, a collective of neurodiverse artists and activists to explore connections between the collective and contemporary artists. Drawn to their unique creative approaches and their experimentation with colour and form, the Project Art Works artists opened up new ways for us to connect and engage with the themes of the Blue Ride while also celebrating the work of contemporary artists and makers working today.”
